Ocean Layers

‘Ocean Layers’ 2018

Water is life.  Without it we would not exist, and yet, it’s purity is contaminated and its conservation is neglected by the society that we are all a part of. These issues are reflected upon in my assemblage works, aiming to bring a greater awareness and accountability for our actions.  By repurposing found and collected materials, objects are assembled together, reminiscent of seascapes.  Exploring above and below the surface, liquid forms and skeletal seaweed structures grow above and below the water’s surface.  Utilizing white paint and etching techniques, the artworks echo the bleaching effects of pollutants upon aquatic life.

In several pieces, a neon glow is added to the works via strip lighting. Reminiscent of city lights, the slowly fading coloured glow reflects off of the water below, allowing the viewer to consider a contrast between nature and man.
